Diploma in Mariology

The two-year Diploma in Mariology is a Faculty initiative aimed at promoting, at a scientific and popular level, a qualified and pastorally valid understanding of the Virgin Mary and her place in God’s plan of salvation.

To achieve this diploma, the standard curriculum includes a two-year program, divided into four semesters of four 45-minute hours per week (Wednesday afternoons 3:30–6:50 PM), organized around the following subjects.

Four core courses (one per semester)

Mary in the New Testament
Mary in the Patristic Tradition
Mary in the Mystery of Christ
Mary in the Mystery of the Church

Eight complementary courses (two per semester):

Mary in Liturgy and Popular Piety
Mary in Orthodox Theology
Mary in Reformation Theology
Mary in the Visual Arts
Mary with a Woman’s Eyes: Between Literature and Theology
Mary between History and Hagiography
Mary in Judaism
Mary in Islam

Upon completion of the courses, students will have reviewed the content that led the pre-conciliar movements associated with the Nouvelle Théologie (biblical, patristic, liturgical, and ecumenical movement) to the renewal of Mariology and the drafting of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium. They will then be introduced to the essential themes that form the backbone of Chapter VIII of the aforementioned document, both in the assertive-dogmatic dimension of the Council itself and of the post-conciliar theological-Mariological dialectic.

At the end of the two-year program, students who have regularly attended courses and passed the required tests, according to the procedures established by the Internal Regulations (see Statutes, art. 101), will be awarded a non-academic Diploma in Mariology.
