{"id":366,"date":"2026-06-07T10:42:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T10:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/?page_id=366"},"modified":"2026-06-07T10:42:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T10:42:25","slug":"history-and-current-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/en\/history-and-current-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"History and current activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>S<\/em><em>tudies in the Mendicant Order of the Servants of Mary, founded in Florence around 1233, have always received particular attention since the earliest legislative texts. On January 30, 1398, Boniface IX, with the papal bull \u201cSincerae devotionis affectus\u201d, granted the Prior General the right to appoint a Master of Sacred Theology during the celebration of the General Chapters, a number that subsequently increased.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On February 21, 1666, under the pontificate of Alexander VII, the academic norms of the newly established General Study Center of San Marcello al Corso (Rome) were approved, while three years later its Statutes were approved, granting its students the faculty to award a Doctorate in Sacred Theology. The General Studies Institute in Rome, the Ghent College dedicated to Henry of Ghent, flourished for over two hundred years, until the suppression of religious orders and congregations in 1873.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After the refoundation of the International College of the Servants of Mary under the name of St. Alessio Falconieri, on November 4, 1895, students were sent to the Ateneo di Propaganda Fide for philosophy and theology studies until the 1930-1931 academic year. Meanwhile, a new building suitable for international theological studies was built on the Janiculum Hill, the current home of the Marianum Faculty, inaugurated in 1928.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the Holy Year of 1950, Pope Pius XII elevated the Theological School of the St. Alessio Falconieri College to a five-year term as a Theological Faculty reserved for the religious Servants of Mary. After completing the five-year probationary period, the Sacred Congregation for Seminaries and Universities, with the decree \u201cCaelesti honorandae Reginae\u201d of December 8, 1955, established the Marianum Theological Faculty, approving its Statutes with the power to grant the academic degrees of Baccalaureate, Licentiate, and Doctoral Degree to students of the Servants of Mary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 1965, the Doctorate in Sacred Theology, with a specialization in Mariology, was established as a qualified expression of the Faculty, while in 1971, the Faculty was awarded the title of Pontifical.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Since the late 1960s, the Marianum has been committed to reconsidering the Second Vatican Council&#8217;s guidelines regarding academic institutions. For its service to theological scientific research, specifically Mariological research, the Faculty has attracted the attention of ecclesiastical institutions and the Bishops of Rome in recent years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Starting from the 2020-2021 academic year, the Marianum Faculty has launched a collaboration program with the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant&#8217;Anselmo for the implementation of the first cycle courses (Institutional Theological Three-Year Course).<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Studies in the Mendicant Order of the Servants of Mary, founded in Florence around 1233, have always received particular<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"colormag_page_container_layout":"default_layout","colormag_page_sidebar_layout":"default_layout","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-366","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/366","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=366"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/366\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":367,"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/366\/revisions\/367"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/marianum.it\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=366"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
